In House floor remarks calling for the removal of Confederate statues from Statuary Hall, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) responded to GOP claims about the Democratic Party’s past racist members by pointing out that during the Civil Rights Movement, when Black Americans and other people of color fought to enter the Democratic Party, those who objected to their joining left the party and joined the Republican Party.
