This TEDxSantaCruz talk is part of 22 surrounding our theme of “the Art of Hope.” Defined as the anticipation of something desired happening, hope is ferocious, persistent, necessary; hope is a powerful force for invention, change, and social justice. To hope is to be human.
Our fifth TEDxSantaCruz event was held on December 7, 2019, at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz, CA. http://www.tedxsantacruz.org/ Roxanne Beltran is a postdoctoral fellow in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology department at UC Santa Cruz. She hopes to better understand the strategies that allow marine mammals to thrive in the open ocean, especially how their behavior and survival may be impacted by our changing planet. Roxanne is also passionate about science communication and inclusion of underrepresented minority students in scientific research. She has combined those two passions using a mathematical approach to understand how learning in nature can engage and retain undergraduate students in STEM. Additionally, Roxanne has written a children’s book, “A Seal Named Patches” and has visited more than 4,000 K-12 students to share her research. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
