On July 8th, President Biden answered reporters’ questions about the Afghan government as the US prepared to fully disengage from the region — and today Taliban forces have surrounded Kabul and appear to stand poised for a takeover of Afghanistan’s largest city, accelerating the U.S.’s evacuation from the region, after the Islamic insurgent group has rapidly taken power of cities throughout Afghanistan faster than anticipated as the U.S. withdraws its military from the Middle Eastern country after nearly two decades.
