It’s a good time to be a billionaire. On average, America’s 400 wealthiest people are 40% richer than one year ago, according to the latest Forbes 400 list, released today. Of the 345 returnees from last year, 314 of them are now wealthier, 14 held steady. Only 17 are poorer than they were last year. The fortunes of the ten biggest gainers increased by an average of 222%, with a minimum bump of 131%. Forbes used closing stock prices from Friday September 3 to calculate the size of the fortunes on the list, our 40th annual ranking of the country’s richest people.
