Do you have super-poo? Could poo transplants (or ‘transpoosions’) help treat obesity, autism and even depression and what part might the #gut #microbiome play in our future #healthcare?
Dr Katerina Johnson from Oxford University is a biologist and science communicator. In her fun and informative #TEDx talk, Dr Katerina shares study findings about the power of #poo and discusses the potential perils ahead. She also considers the growing interest in personal microbiome testing and what we can learn from it, as well as whether #probiotics are beneficial and how we can look after our gut and its #microbes through #diet and #lifestyle.
The microbiome is one of the most rapidly developing and exciting areas of research in #biology… so how might this realisation that we’re half human and half #bacteria impact our future #health and #wellbeing?

Dr Katerina Johnson actively communicates science to the public and media in a way that’s entertaining and understandable and has received numerous awards for her work in public engagement. Since the very start of her PhD, she has been featured on national and international TV and radio (e.g. Sky News, ITV, CTV, BBC Radio 4 & World Service), as well as in newspapers and books, and also speaking at events. Whilst her PhD was on the science of that ‘gut feeling’ and how microorganisms can affect the brain, she has a broad knowledge of biology with her research also spanning fields such as animal behaviour, neuroscience and evolution. She particularly enjoys talking about scientific findings that have the potential to widely affect our lives or with implications for understanding the nature of who we are.

Her PhD was on the science of that “gut feeling”, investigating how the community of microorganisms living in the gut, known as the gut microbiome, can affect the brain and behaviour. She enjoys engaging and informing both the public and the media… in fact, one of her mottos is “If you don’t think science is cool, you haven’t been taught it right!” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
